Born with severe eye problems, Benode Bihari Mukherjee joined Santiniketan as a student and later became an influential teacher and principal. A versatile artist, he experimented with various art forms and mediums, including painting, calligraphy and murals.

Mukherjee's most celebrated work is his monumental mural on the lives of medieval saints of India at Santiniketan. In 1956, Mukherjee completely lost his sight. Even though he was visually impaired, he continued working and shifted to new mediums like collage and printmaking.
