Drawing on stained metal plateChung Hyun produces as much drawings as his sculpture. Drawing is, in fact, inseparable from his sculpture. They are the emotional memos that come before, during, and after working. Rather than planning a certain form for a piece, with every stroke of the brush, the artist captures and expresses mental and emotional states. He compresses such large psychological content, and is able to manifest it in drawing. Sculpture is manipulated until its finished state, but drawing shows the raw energy that comes right out of his imagination, Chung’s drawing goes beyond the use of paper, pen and ink. He scratches stained metal plates, hammers them, and exposes them from the back of his car to leave marks. This instinctive, momentary, and natural drawing speaks of his emotional state in response to the raw materials that time and movement has influenced.
