Delia Cugat (1935-2020) was one of the pioneering female figures of contemporary Argentine painting. She was founder of the Grabas Group (“Gráficos de Buenos Aires”) together with her husband and artist Sergio Camporeale, Pablo Obelar, and Daniel Zelaya. After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Cugat ventured into theater as a stage and costume designer, an influence that would become evident in her later work. In 1976, she moved to France, where she developed the bulk of her artistic production and exhibited in galleries in Paris, Basel, Madrid, and New York, among other cities.
The scenes that Cugat paints seem to be wrapped in suspense; her characters possess a melancholic air and occupy the same theatrical space, but do not communicate with each other. In addition, her magnificent use of blues and yellow ochres, and at other times of transparent pinks, lend her paintings and engravings a pleasing sense of mystery.
