Dilip Das Gupta was born in Shimla in 1931, studied at the Delhi Polytechnic and then later in Italy. An eminent painter of landscapes, Gupta's watercolour paintings are primarily known for bringing alive the intricacies of nature in meticulous detail. He also worked with oil on canvas mediums.

He has exhibited his work worldwide and was the Professor of Painting at the Faculty of Visual Arts in Banaras Hindu University. Having spent almost his whole career capturing the scenes on the banks of the Ganges, Dasgupta now lives and paints in Varanasi.
