In 2011, Pinkel discovered when she scanned camera lenses on a flatbed scanner that every lens has its own unique refractive 'fingerprint'. Since then she has been scanning lenses of friends and lenses housed in the California Museum of Photography archives, which is the largest collection of historic and contemporary lenses on the west coast of the United States.
