Ghulam Rasool Santosh was a Kashmiri artist and poet who began his career by painting signboards and weaving and making paper-mâché objects to support his family. In the 1950s, he joined Kashmir's Progressive Artists Association, which was inspired by Bombay's Progressive Artists Group. A visit to Amarnath Cave in 1964 triggered Santosh's interest in Tantric philosophy and Kashmiri Shaivism. He then began making abstract paintings exploring Tantric ideas in Indian religious iconography.
