All prehistoric pottery was made by hand; the potter’s wheel had not yet been invented. Pots were sometimes used as urns, besides their normal domestic purposes. The ashes from the funeral pyre and the deceased’s cremated remains were placed in the urn and interred in an urnfield. This handsome piece displays so-called Kalenderberg decorations, consisting of fingertip impressions in block-shaped motifs.
