This photo of the USS DETROIT (Cruiser No. 10) (C-10) was given to the Naval History and Heritage Command by Mr. H.I. Chapelle, a Curator of Naval History at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of History and Technology; now the National Museum of American History.

Owney the Dog visited this ship while he was on a worldwide tour in the mid-1890s. The ship was docked in Foo Chow on Oct 31, 1896 when Owney was brought on aboard for a visit. as noted in this article:
