Yad Vashem

A Jewish citizen of the Soviet Union. He was a newspaper editor prior to the war and a distinguished officer in the infantry during the war. He was awarded the "Mark of Alexander Nevski" within a short period of time. On 04/02/1943, he landed with 250 volunteer soldiers on the west coast of a bay in the area of Novorossiysk, Russia. He fell in battle. The place was later named "Majala Zemla". After his death on 17/04/1943, he was bestowed the title of "Hero of the Soviet Union". Memorial plaques were placed on the buildings where he lived and worked. Streets, ships, and a school were named after him.
