In many ports of call, shops catering to visiting sailors produced personalized souvenirs. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum holds a collection of custom patches from the Cold War period. These patches celebrate individual divisions or teams on the aircraft carrier Intrepid and highlight their contributions to the ship.
The V-1 Division worked on the flight deck, or “roof,” of Intrepid. “Yellow shirts” directed all aircraft movement, while “blue shirts” formed the aircraft handling crews. The air boss is shown here on the ship’s island superstructure. The airplanes resemble the North American FJ Fury, a fighter jet that flew from Intrepid in the late 1950s.
