Not every plaything is a toy. Even common household objects can appeal to kids in surprising ways. This Dirt Devil was the subject of a video of the Izzo twins Alan and Andrew playing with, and contending over, a grown up vacuum cleaner that fascinated them. Mom, Peg Izzo, wisely let the camera roll even as they became cross with each other. The twins both played with the Dirt Devil, too, even bringing it to day care in the early 1990s when caretakers urged parents to allow their children to bring a favorite toy. Adults often separate work and play. Children don?t make that mistake. Therefore just about any intriguing object can become a toy in the hands of children, especially something that is as red as a fire engine, makes an exciting noise, and pulls up the nap on carpet pleasingly.
