This jar contains mullets, scaly, sturdy fishes with a small spine as the first of the two dorsal fins and a ventral fin. These shy fishes are mainly found on the coast. Pieter Bleeker named this species after his most important illustrator.

Pieter Bleeker (1819 - 1878) was a Dutch physician and fish expert, famous for his research on fish in East Asia. He collected more than 12,000 specimens, many of which are still in the Naturalis collection.
