This large vase has a luxuriant glazed surface from which sunflowers project slightly, giving them an extraordinary sense of depth and richness. Inspired by European and Japanese ceramics at Philadelphia’s 1876 Centennial Exposition, Maria Longworth Nichols formed Rookwood Pottery in 1880. By 1900, Rookwood Pottery was among the leading American art pottery firms, noted for its innovative glazes and accomplished, painterly decoration.
