The Paracas Cavernas style, so named by Julio C. Tello on the basis of the early funerary contexts found in the southern coast of Peru, is distinguished by the unique decoration of their ceramics, in which vibrant colors were achieved with mineral resins applied after firing. The incised designs on the vase highlight the various forms of the local fauna such as falcons, condors, foxes, felines, sea birds or toads, as illustrated in this ceremonial vase. On the other hand, the Paracas Cavernas iconography is also associated with a supernatural being that is often depicted with a grim smile and saucer eyes, and which has come to be known as the “Oculate Being”.
