The influence of contemporary Asian and European decorative arts, which inspired Maria Longworth Nichols to found Rookwood Pottery, are evident in this vase. While the crab applied in relief to its side is derived from Meiji period Japanese ceramics, characterized by extreme naturalism and three-dimensionality, its swirled glaze is reminiscent of Japanese-inspired ceramics and glass produced in _fin de siècle _France.
