Cubic Vases with Blue Decoration

Koloman Moser1900

Leopold Museum

Leopold Museum
Vienna, Austria

These dice-like objects made from white glass were considered a novelty in 1900. The decoration is reduced to simple lines and dots in ink-blue. Abstracted, vegetal ornamentations of this kind are specific to those years and can also be found in Gustav Klimt’s work. In their seemingly endless variety of decorations, Moser’s luxury items informed the modern taste of Vienna’s well-to- do society. Leopold Bauer’s design was executed by one of the most reputable and innovative companies of the times, the Johann Lötz Witwe company.
