The Bakuba women have relevant roles in their politics, a lot of times holding positions of leadership and priesthood. Still nowadays, crafstwomen are responsible for the production of elegant embroidering textiles. Between the shapes of embroiders, the most notables are called "Kasaï vevelts." They are manufactured especially by a Bakuba group called Shoowa. This velvet is made from the shredded raffia textile, which is used as a blanket or house ornament.
