During his journeys to Italy (1824 – 36), the painter and art researcher Wilhelm Zahn (1800 – 1871) created exact copies of Roman mural paintings from Pompeii and Herculaneum by using tracing technique. He then coloured the traced drawings and published them in editions, which at that time were widely distributed.
