Eisenstein drew bullfights, ritual dances and familiar themes of Christian iconography, Salome and John the Baptist, Joseph and Potiphar’s wife, St. Sebastian, Judas and Jesus, Christ — dismembered, martyred bodies, a series of agonizing deaths, the seducer and the seduced, the martyr and the tormentor, the dying and the resurrected, as well as the first ‘female photo journalist’ who records all of this: Saint Veronica, precursor of photography and film.
