The carte de visite shown here is probably the earliest known photograph of Lockwood, taken when she was headmistress at Union School in Lockport, New York. Prior to publication of yearbooks, students and teachers at schools, colleges and universities used to pass out c.d.v.'s of one another at graduation time. This particular example was saved by one of Lockwood's students, who noted on the back of the card that at the time Lockwood went under the name of her first husband, Uriah McNall.
