Container with raised decoration made in a single-valve mold and finished with a potter's wheel for the rim, base, and inside wall. The handle is topped with a ram's head and has been hand-molded then attached. The surface has been made waterproof using a red varnish. This design used metal, silver, and bronze examples as a model.
The decoration represents a Bacchic scene: four maenads dance holding sistrum percussion instruments and wearing light tunics to the sound of an aulos. This oboe-like instrument is played by a Silenus sitting in the middle of the maenads. The top of the decoration features a line of egg-shaped ornamentation.
Two cartouches bear the name of the maker and decorator: M. Perennius Tigranus, one of the most famous artisans of those operating in ancient Arretium (now Arezzo, Italy).
This container was used for serving sauces at the table.
