The figures on Vessel with a Ball Game Scene are engaged in a ritual ball game commonly played in Late Classic period (A.D. 600–900) Maya cities. The protective ball game equipment includes a heavy wood-and-leather belt and knee pad. The figure with his hand on the ball is wearing a deer headdress, often worn by victorious ballplayers. The glyphic text in front of his head gives his name and describes him as a prince (chok). The background shows the pyramid steps upon which spectators would have watched the game.
