The Victoria University of Manchester originated as Owens College, which was founded in 1851. From 1872 it incorporated the Royal School of Medicine and Surgery. Its growth led to the construction of new buildings on a site adjacent to Oxford Road, including designs by architect Alfred Waterhouse, who had been responsible for Manchester Town Hall.
