Infinity Ward and Activision returned to develop and publish the 2005 continuation of the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty 2. The most popular launch title for the Xbox 360 game console, Call of Duty 2 sold 250,000 copies in its first week. Call of Duty 2 is a first-person shooter military simulation game that focuses on infantry warfare during World War II. A player chooses whether they act as an American, British, or Soviet infantry soldier, fighting the Third Reich from different fronts. Each campaign possesses a different storyline, complete with authentic weapons based on time period and nation. The four single-player campaigns consist of a total 27 espionage and assault missions in large landscapes. Missions usually require the completion of multiple objectives, and an on-screen compass aids the player in reaching progressive checkpoints. Single-player campaign mode features four difficulty levels: easy, regular, hardened, and veteran. Increased difficulty means more strategy and lengthier gameplay. Multiplayer games feature several formats, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Headquarters, and Search & Destroy, which have their own maps. Players use a variety of weapons, both individual firearms and heavy artillery, depending on the scenario. Call of Duty 2 differs from its predecessor in that it introduces automatically-regenerating health. When a player is wounded, the screen turns red and the player must exit the firefight to recover. In addition to this change, critics praised the game for its improved artificial intelligence, graphics, and sound. In 2006, Infinity Ward released an update titled Call of Duty 2: Radiant, which consists of a mapmaker and other editing tools that allow players to further customize their maps and gameplay. Creators of Call of Duty 2 endeavored to create an immersive, holistic, and authentic game. A mobile version of Call of Duty 2 also became available in 2006, as a 2D top-down shooter.
