Publisher Psygnosis released Lemmings in 1991. A puzzle-platformer, Lemmings received critical acclaim for its originality and addicting gameplay. The goal is to guide a group of lemmings through 120 levels wrought with obstacles such as pits, steep drops, rivers, and other hazards that may cause the demise of the lemmings. The creatures blindly fall into these traps if not guided. Players assign the lemmings skills such as climbing, floating, building or digging to guide them past obstacles. Lemmings was a commercial success at the time of release and won many international awards. Critics praised its combination of strategy, puzzles, and action. Lemmings is considered to be one of the first games to introduce "indirect control," a feature that became standard in real-time strategy titles. Lemmings inspired a number of sequels and expansion packs. An installment was released for the PlayStation 3 as recently as 2007. Lemmings is remembered fondly for its originality and is considered a gaming classic.
