Publisher Bungie Software released the first game of the Marathon trilogy in 1994. A first-person shooter (FPS) with a sci-fi plotline, the trilogy received critical acclaim for its breakthrough technological innovations. Marathon introduced the mouse-look feature, one of the most important innovations in the FPS genre. Mouse-look allows players to use the mouse to move the camera up and down, left and right. This provides a 360 degree view of the setting, allowing players to experience and explore the gameworld as never before. Mouse-look became universal in modern FPS titles and is integral in today's most popular video games including Call of Duty and Counter-Strike. The Marathon trilogy also features a multiplayer mode in which players compete in free-for-all death matches and other games. It is considered one of the first FPS titles to feature voice chat in multiplayer mode as well the option of duel-wielding, using two weapons at once. The engine features a sophisticated physics model that allows for low-gravity maps in which the character floats across the landscape. Marathon also received critical acclaim for its detailed storyline. Its rich plot was unique at a time when most FPS's neglected the storyline element and focused instead on action. The Marathon franchise culminated in three installments, the latest released in 1996. Its technological breakthroughs earn Marathon an important place in the history of electronic games.
