Publisher Cinemaware released Defender of the Crown for the Commodore Amiga in 1986. Gameplay features a unique mix of turn-based strategy and action. The game received critical acclaim for its high-quality graphics and animation and is considered a milestone in the videogame industry. Defender of the Crown transports players to Medieval England where the kingdom is in chaos. The King is dead and the Normans and Saxons are fighting for control. Players assume the role of a Saxon lord and set out to unite the country by building an army and conquering every province on the map. Along the way players participate in jousting and archery tournaments, rescue princesses, raid enemy castles, destroy fortresses via catapult, and enlist the help of the legendary Robin Hood. Defender of the Crown was a commercial success and is considered a classic strategy game. The game was ported to a variety of platforms, including the iPhone and iPad as recently as 2011. It inspired two remakes, Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown (2003) and Defender of the Crown: Heroes Live Forever (2007) as well as a digitally remastered collector's edition released in 2002.
