Developed and published by Capcom in 2005, Resident Evil 4 became the second Resident Evil game to debut on a Nintendo home console. The franchise, known as Biohazard??in Japan, coined the term survival horror,??a genre characterized by limited ammunition and health, dark and complex environments, and a feeling of isolation due to a low number of non-player characters. Initially released for GameCube and later available on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii, and as a mobile application, gamers and critics alike praised the game?s ability to create a truly terrifying atmosphere. The single-player game, viewed in third-person perspective, centers on two characters: Leon Kennedy and Ashley Graham. Set in Spain and taking place six years after Resident Evil 2, the plot centers on Leon, a United States government agent, who is searching for the President?s daughter, Ashley, recently kidnapped by members of a cult. Leon must rescue Ashley, and both must fight against captivity and a mind-controlling parasite called Las Plagas. Resident Evil 4 introduces many new gameplay elements. For instance, the player only controls Leon, rather than multiple characters, and the game focuses much more on shooting crowds of enemies in open areas, which is a departure from the puzzle-solving aspects of previous games. Context-sensitive controls and laser sights for firearms became important additions, allowing the player to better utilize the game environment and shoot more accurately. Unlockable content in the form of minigames and accessories becomes available after the completion of the main game. Resident Evil 4 is most often praised for its over-the-shoulder??third-person perspective, which utilizes offset camera angles that do not obstruct views of the action. The precision aiming and perspective of Resident Evil 4 have come to redefine the survival horror genre and other third-person shooter games. In 2011, Capcom ported Resident Evil 4 to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. Named Game of the Year??by Game Informer, Nintendo Power, and at the 2005 Spike Video Game Awards, Resident Evil 4 is considered a colossal success. Resident Evil 4 also holds the Best-Selling Survival Horror Game??record in the 2012 Guinness World Records Gamer?s Edition. The franchise continues to spawn sequels, novels, and even a film series.
