Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader is an arcade-style action game available on the Nintendo GameCube. Factor 5 and LucasArts teamed up to develop the game, which became the first of the series to not appear on either the Nintendo 64 or PC. The game serves as a direct sequel to Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

After Battle for Naboo featured a story surrounding a single film, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Rogue Leader followed in the footsteps of the first Rogue Squadron game and returned to the original trilogy. Players control both Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles, as the Rebel Alliance fights against the Galactic Empire. While piloting several different ships based on the films, players complete a number of objectives across the game?s 10 missions. These missions tie-in to significant events of the films in the original trilogy, including the Rebel Alliance?s assault on the Death Star, the Empire?s attack of the Rebel base on the planet Hoth, and the attack on the second Death Star. Moving to the next generation of consoles benefited the overall gameplay of Rogue Leader. Flying became more fluid, and the controls more responsive and tighter. The game also added the ability for the player to command friendly ships in their squad. Using the D-pad (directional pad), players can tell their squad members to regroup with them, attack TIE-fighters (enemy aircraft), or attack ground units.

The player progression system in Rogue Leader remains largely the same as the first Rogue Squadron game and Battle for Naboo. Players earn medals for each level if they achieve certain qualifications across several different categories. These medals in-turn unlock bonus levels and ships, which can alternatively be unlocked by password. The five bonus levels revolve around flying the Millennium Falcon, fighting the Rebel Alliance as Darth Vader, and facing 99 waves of enemy ships. Players who earn Gold medals on all 15 of the missions unlock an Ace Mode,??which provides one more medal per level that players can try to earn. Similar to in the first Rogue Squadron entry, Rogue Leader also contains a secret password to unlock an alternate color scheme for the ship Slave I, as seen in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
