Star Wars: Battlefront is a first- and third-person shooter, available to play on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC, and Mac. Released in 2004 by Pandemic Studios, Battlefront became the first entry of the popular series of the same name.

Battlefront challenges players to capture and hold command posts in a conquest-style game type. Each side begins with a set number of reinforcements, which dwindles down as combat units are killed or when the opposing side takes control of the majority of command posts. When one side runs out of reinforcements, they lose the game. Both infantry- and vehicle-based fighting can take place, with authentic soldiers and vehicles from both the prequel trilogy and original trilogy. All of the factions possess five different classes from which the player can choose, which have different characteristics and weapons. The game's campaign features iconic battles from both sets of trilogies, and player control rotates through all of the combat factions, including the Separatist droid army, the Galactic Empire, the Clone Troopers, and the Rebel Alliance, depending on which battle is being fought.

The Galactic Conquest game mode plays out very much like a game of Risk. Two opposing sides start off at different ends of a galaxy comprised of many planets. When a side attacks a neutral or enemy-controlled planet, a match begins, and whoever wins the match gains control of the planet. Certain planets also contain bonuses which can be used to aid the player's own forces or hinder the enemy, when activated. A game of Galactic Conquest ends when one side captures all of the planets in the galaxy.

Battlefront included online multiplayer in the form of team-deathmatch style gameplay. The PC version supported up to 32 players online or up to 50 players on LAN (Local area network) at one time. Alternatively, the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions supported up to 16 and 24 online players, respectively.
