Based on the popular book of the same name, The Hobbit is a single-player fantasy adventure in which players assume the role of Bilbo Baggins and guide him on a quest through Middle Earth with the ultimate goal of reaching the Lonely Mountain and defeating the dragon Smaug. Along the way players experience various scenarios from the book, face enemies in combat, sneak invisible past trolls and dragons, solve puzzles and meet many familiar friends.
Released in 1982, the original Hobbit was groundbreaking in several aspects. The Hobbit is a text-adventure and featured a sophisticated language recognition system which permitted players to type advanced sentences, allowing for a greater degree of interaction with the game. The Hobbit also featured non-player characters that moved independently of the player, their actions dictated by unique personalities and strengths. These characters gave the game a level of unpredictability which was unique in adventure games of the time.
The Hobbit regained popularity following the release of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Publisher Sierra Entertainment released an updated version of the game in 2003, allowing a new generation of players to accompany Bilbo on his adventure through Middle Earth.
