Assassin's Creed is an open world action-adventure franchise developed by Ubisoft Montreal and first released in 2007 for the XBox 360 and Playstation 3 platforms.

The plot of the game revolves around a centuries old struggle between The Assassin Order and the Order of the Knights Templar. The game features an interesting split narrative where players alternate between playing in the present day and playing in the past through the use of a fictional device known in the game as the Animus. The Animus is a virtual reality machine that has been modified to read and recreate the genetic memories of a subject, thereby allowing him to experience moments of an ancestor's life.

The Assassin's Creed games take place over a variety of time periods and feature open world recreations of many real cities during key moments in their history, such as the Israeli cities of Acre and Jerusalem during the Crusades, the Italian cities of Rome and Venice during the Renaissance, and the American colonial cities of Boston and New York during the Revolutionary War. Along with highly detailed open world maps to explore, players may also encounter prominent historical figures from these different time periods. Some of these historical figures become allies, while others become targets for assassination.

Since much of the game revolves around assassinating targets who are believed to be a threat by the Assassin Order, the game incorporates stealth techniques, such as hiding in crowds, to avoid detection. One of the key features of the Assassin's Creed franchise is the use of parkour elements in the gameplay. Parkour is an urban sport where practitioners attempt to get from point A to point B in the quickest fashion while negotiating obstacles in their way. This often means scaling the sides of buildings, running across rooftops, and jumping between platforms.

In the years since its release, Assassin's Creed has become a flagship title for Ubisoft. Along with an extensive catalog of video games, the series includes novels, comic books, and multiple animated short films. The expansion of the franchise into other forms of media has helped to make Assassin's Creed not only an important piece of gaming history, but an important piece of pop culture.
