Seal of the Grand Treasurer - View 2

The seal is molded copper and has a columnar knob. The stamping side has an intagliated border and a definitive marker separating the left characters from the right. The text is rendered in the old seal script of the Warring States period. Cut in relief, it is to be read from left to right. With wide strokes, it resembles calligraphy. Although the base of the seal is broad, the characters are not amply spaced. Meanwhile, an artistic feel is present in the few characters. The character fu (an official designation) is followed by the character bei (indicating a currency); together, these two characters indicate storing wealth or money.
The large size of the seal is rare among other seals of the period. Unlike smaller knobs complemented with a silk tassel, this columnar knob is easily held in the hand. It is an official seal of the State of Chu from the Warring States period. The characters da fu indicate the official government position of grand treasurer. During the period, various officials oversaw agencies that supervised various aspects of resources and storage for the society, commercial production, or government agencies.
