This is plate IV of Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology, published in 1832. The plate presents a view of the crater of Etna and illustrates Lyell's field work to determine the structure and formation of volcanoes.
Lyell also sought to date the formation of the volcano and the Earth opposing the catastrophist view to propose instead a theory of slow movement of the Earth's crust.

The Principles of Geology were published in three volumes between 1830 and 1833.
