Carl Friedrich Kaeppel
was a painter, draftsman and engraver. At the Nuremberg Art School he studied
under Albert Reindel and Friedrich Geissler. By the age of twenty, he was
already gaining a reputation as a sensitive watercolorist and conscientious
depicter of reality.

This painting is a good
example of his work in a considerable number of watercolors that mostly
depicted views of Nuremberg and the "Franconian Switzerland"
north-northeast of the city. Some of his paintings served as a basis for
lithographs. In 1845, Kaeppel documented Nuremberg's enclosing walls in a
series of more than 20 watercolors, including this one.
