STS062-81-024 (4-18 March) --- This 70mm frame, photographed through the aft flight deck windows of the earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia, features activity with the Dexterous End Effector (DEE) on the Remote Manipulator System (RMS). During this 14-day mission, three of the five STS-62 crewmembers took turns operating and observing the RMS in a series of one-hour sessions. Tasks involve aligning the arm with targets, grappling a test probe, inserting it into receptacles of progressively smaller clearances and applying force and torque to the probe with the arm. This scene also provides an overview of many of the United States Microgravity Payload 2 (USMF) elements as well as OAST-2 experiments.
