Virgin with Child, after Roger van der Weyden

16th Century

Torreón, Mexico

Roger van der Weyden is one of the greatest XV century Flemish masters since he laid out the basis for the development of naturalist painting in Flanders. He reflected great expressive strength in his portraits and complex harmony in his compositions.
His work greatly influenced other artists and proof of it is this pair of representations of the Virgin with Child. One is a literal copy of the Flemish author, and the other was inspired by it. The poignant gesture of tenderness between the people painted and the quality of the transparency of the cloth that covers the child converted the work into a common typology of the XVI century.
