One of the most important American Baroque painters of his day and a student of Melchor Pérez de Holguín, Gaspar Miguel de Berrío was representative of the School of Potosí. His works combine religious themes and symbols, gold leaf, and contemporary townscapes. This work was commissioned by Juan de Iturbe of Potosí, and purchased at Sotheby’s auction in 1992.
