Museu de São Roque

This painting was originally situated at the altar of the Martyr Saints protecting the precious collection of relics of this Jesuit temple.
It carries a special significance on the iconographic point of view, as it served to relate the image and the relics themselves, a connection that had been fomented by the Council of Trent (1545-1563). The painting gives prominence to the crowned Virgin, in the centre, holding in her right hand the lily of purity and in the left a palm of the martyr, being surrounded by the glory of musical angels. On each side, groups of saints are arranged, in composition similar to its partner painting, with special pre-eminence for the Saints Catherine, Apollonia, and Agatha emphasised in the left hand group of the panel, and Saints Barbara, Lucy and Clare, on the right hand side followed by an uncountable multitude of Virgin Martyrs with stereotyped features.
