It took four years to construct the Museum's Allosaurus, a composite of two incomplete skeletons that was first displayed in 1908. Allosaurus was posed as a voracious scavenger standing astride the carcass of a partial Apatosaurus skeleton, which had been discovered near the same site with deep grooves in its tail vertebrae. Such injuries may have been inflicted by the sharp claws and teeth of the carnivore, and a scattering of Allosaurus teeth found nearby provided paleontologists with the inspiration for this dynamic scene.
