In ancient religious imagery, the nimbus was used to symbolise the divine wisdom and enlightenment of the gods and was an important feature in distinguishing the gods from the humans.
Lu Yang has designed a series of wearable nimbuses, presented as an interactive installation for people of indiscriminate faiths and perspectives. Walking Nimbus provides for a contemporary imagination the images of religious icons and draws attention to the long-lasting devotion to divine wisdom by human beings. The artwork challenges the traditional forms of the ‘nimbus’, as it was originally used, posing such questions as: could the images of certain ancient religious icons become shared cultural heritage for all?
