Inspired by the hunting spear, this pole weapon can be identified by the anvil-shaped wings framing the central metal tip with a dual cutting edge. As a thrusting weapon, it was mostly used for its tip, and equipped foot soldiers from the 12th century onwards. The war spear was designed to pierce and tear through chainmail (role of the tip), but also enabled the user to keep an injured enemy at bay (role of the wing tips).
The metal tip is attached to the top of the shaft with a dowel and can hold hilts, seeing as, like most medieval weapons, the shape of the metal tip and the length of the shaft varied a lot from one version to another.
