Li Tiefu originally named Li Yutian, was born in Heshan, Guangdong province. He went to Canada to earn a living in 1885, and was admitted into the Arlington School of Art in 1887, then studied painting in the UK for 9 years in the Royal College of Art afterwards. He was a founding member of Sun Yat-sen’s Revive China Society British branch in 1907, and actively participated in the formation of Tongmenghui (United League) across the USA and the UK since then. In 1913 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in NewYork, where he won a championship in the bronze sculpturing in 1914 and followed artists William Chess and John Singer Sargent in doing art studies. In 1916 he was accepted as a member of International Academy of Design for 21 of his painting works. He had one-man art shows in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Shanghai since his returning to China in 1930. In 1944 he finished a famous painting of revolutionary history — The Death of Martyr Cai Tingrui. He came to Guangzhou via Hong Kong in 1950, served as the vice president of South China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and honorary professor in the South China Academy of the People's Literature and Art.
