In the 1980s, nuclear engineer Dr. Lonnie Johnson fashioned a makeshift water pistol with pressurized water that shot a volume of water into the distance. His first soaker was fashioned of PVC pipe, Plexiglas, and parts he made in his home workshop, and Johnson had a hard time finding a manufacturer to produce his toy. Two companies he approached went out of business before they could manufacturer the water gun. Finally, in the late 1980s, Johnson showed his product to the Larami Corporation at the New York Toy Fair and struck a deal. The first offering, called the Power Drencher, appeared in 1989. The name was changed to Super Soaker in 1991. The toy was a huge success. In the years it has been on the market, hundreds of millions of Super Soakers have sold worldwide
