This striking still life is less concerned with depicting fruit than experimenting with different shades of yellow. Van Gogh has even painted the frame yellow and ochre, with brush strokes that bear some resemblance to Japanese characters. He dedicated the painting to his brother Theo, who often urged him to use more colour in his work.

Van Gogh had originally painted a landscape on this canvas, which he later painted over with this still life with fruit.
