Writing a letter to one’s lover is one of the most popular themes of Indian romantic art, irrespective of whatever its medium, the stone or paper. The Khajuraho temple sculpture of the young lady writing the letter of love to her lover is world-wide known for its great emotionality. This Kangra lady is deeply involved in emotion. Overwhelmed by the very thought of her love, she finds it difficult to translate into words the agitations in her mind and her entire being. The mood is her own and so is the moment she is passing through, but despite all the energy deployed, she is unable to being them on paper.

She is seated against a bolster in her arched balcony with a confidante attending upon. She is standing outside the pavilion, not so much to fan her to keep vigil and enable her mistress to accomplish her work in absolute secrecy. Obviously, hers is a love letter and for writing it she is well equipped, though despite her long sitting she has been able to write just a line, perhaps a mere salutation. The Kangra painter has successfully encapsulated in few strokes of his brush highly dramatic event which most young ladies discovers in their lives and has elevated it to the poetic sublimity.
