17th century

Fries Museum

Fries Museum
Leeuwarden, Netherlands

This marriage heart is inscribed with the text: ‘Love is the beginning, it is above all. For where there is no love, one cannot praise God’. When proposing marriage, a young man presented the girl of his dreams with a silver heart as a symbol of his love and fidelity. When she unscrewed the love arrows, she discovered a surprise gift in the heart-shaped box, for example, coins or a ring.
