An earthenware tablet, called Haycarting, made by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) in 1795 and painted in enamels by George Stubbs (1724-1806), the Liverpool artist. This tablet measures 76.8cm x 105 cmx 1.4 cm and is the largest size of tablet that Wedgwod ever made. These large ceramic tablets were difficult to make and many did not survive the firing process. In one firing only 4 out of 24 survived the kiln. Stubbs required large flat panels to paint on in enamels, which again had to be fired onto the ceramic tablet in a kiln. Once fixed in the kiln the colours in the painting will not change, so they are just as fresh today as they were when Stubbs painted the tablet.
