Werner Siemens was an engineer officer in the Berlin artillery workshop and a member of the Prussian Telegraph Commission. Together with the precision mechanic Johann Georg Halske, in 1974 he founded the telegraph construction company Siemens & Halske. Initially, they built needle telegraphs designed by Siemens, but they soon focused on the superior Morse telegraph. Telegraphy made Siemens & Halske one of the world's largest electrical companies.
