Kesi Cloud Shoulder Fragment with Heavenly Deer

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

Some cloud shoulders of the Yuan dynasty can be found with an adorned horizontal belt, which is known as “shoulder banner”. The piece is believed to be the part of the shoulder banner that joints the shoulder and the sleeve. Made of kesi, a silk tapestry literally meaning “cut silk”, named for the cut-like edges of patterns on the foundation weave, this item features several parallel belt zones on the edge adorned with continuous curly leaves, whereas the area in between is filled with flowering branches on a purple foundation. In the center among the branches appears a four-petal floral roundel, in which there is a deer lying under flowering trees, a pattern typical of Yuan-dynasty decoration. The area beyond the belt zones is also embellished with flowers on branches on a red foundation.
